What is Engineering Technology?
The B.S. in Engineering Technology prepares graduates to work in environments where they apply math and science concepts as they solve real-world problems. Developing technical skills support students’ ability to resolve problems and provide solutions.
ASEE's Engineering Technology Council defines Engineering Technology in this way:
Engineering technology is a profession in which a knowledge of mathematics and natural sciences gained by higher education, experience, and practice is devoted primarily to the implementation and extension of existing technology for the benefit of humanity. Engineering technology education focuses primarily on the applied aspects of science and engineering aimed at preparing graduates for practice in that portion of the technological spectrum closest to the product improvement, manufacturing, and engineering operational functions.
Why would you want to be an Engineering Technologist?
- You like to design things.
- You like to build things.
- You like to make things work.
- You like to take things apart.
- You like to see how things work.
- You like to work with people.
Engineering Technology Programs
Engineering technology programs focus on application and practice, and courses are made up of an approximate 50/50 mix of theory and laboratory experience. Generally, Faculty hold technical masters degrees (usually in engineering, but occasionally in engineering technology), have industrial experience, and many are registered professional engineers.
Engineering Technology students usually come from the top half of their graduating class, rather than from only the top 5-10 percent (as is seen in major engineering programs). Women and minorities enroll at about the same percentages as in engineering programs.
Graduates find positions in a variety of organizations and are employed across the technological spectrum, but are better suited to areas that deal with application, implementation, and production, as opposed to the conceptual design and research functions. Graduates are also employed in Technical sales and customer services fields.
